GETTY VILLA, Getty yourself over to this den of antiquities!
In 1957, Fortune magazine declared Jean Paul Getty the richest person in the world. A little over a decade after garnering himself the title, JPG began plans to build a Roman-style villa on his 64-acre seaside Malibu estate. Not for himself was the villa, but for We the Public.
The Getty Villa is FREE and open to the public Tuesday-Monday. The grounds feature gardens emulating the courtyard gardens of Rome’s wealthiest inhabitants. The museum features antiquities from the Greek, Roman and Etruscan period. There is an amphitheater, a café, a gift shop and birds-eye views of the Pacific.
Spend a day. Eat at the café or pack a lunch and eat at the mostly unused picnic tables by the education center.

- The museum is free, but parking is $15. If you don’t mind a little uphill walk, you can park on the PCH for free. Or park twice, pay once: Get same-day parking at both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa for one $15 fee. Visit the Museum Information Desk at the Center or the Villa to obtain a coupon good for same-day complimentary parking at the other site.
